Teaching kids about gardening

Some of my fondest memories of my childhood revolves around visiting my grandparents.  It was such a treat to spend a month with them every summer!  I’m sure my parents enjoyed the break too!

We helped Gramps with the livestock.  It wasn’t work when it was with Grandpa – it was an adventure!  He let me ride with him on his tractor from time to time, which made me feel really special!  We helped to feed the chickens, and get the eggs out of the nests.  We got to play with the kittens and puppies, and feed the ducks.

I can remember the time when Grandma had us help her to repaint her window boxes.  She liked to give them a fresh coat of paint every few years.  After we painted them all, we  were each “given” a window box of our own to plant and tend.  She took us to the farmer’s market where she let out pick out the seedlings that we wanted for our gardens.  She showed us how to fill the bottoms with broken flower pots and gravel, then planting soil, and then put in the seedlings.  Then more soil, some decorative gravel, and some little figures of elves for an extra special touch.  She let me put my GI Joes in my window box, and let me pretend that they were on a jungle mission.

Every time I see a window box now, I get a melancholy feeling for the old days back at the grandparent’s farm.  Those were the simple, good old days!

Full moon

I was noticing the moon as it was rising this evening. There is always a time of the evening when the moon looks enourmous. I’ve heard and read explanations about why it looks larger but that it really isn’t larger. Suggestions are made about using a pencil’s eraser to prove it. Well, I admit I’m lazy, and I’ve never tried it but I find it hard to believe it is an optical illusion. Maybe one night later this summer I’ll look up the details of it and try it out. What do you think – is it an optical illusion?

The good old days

Mom asked me to help her go through the storage area of the basement to help her sort through some of the mementos of my youth. So I went ahead and spent several hours yesterday with her, sorting though the old action figures and ride on toys that were so important to me when I was a child.

We set aside the classic toys like the legos and the brio train set. I had a huge amount of both of them!  I spent so many hours playing with them.  I tried to collect all of the brios cars and different types of track.  I don’t think that those will ever lose their popularity among the young kids.

Some of the toys were put in a box to give away on freecycle. It will be interesting to see how many of those will be claimed. I hate to throw any of them away that are still in good working order!  It was an amazing trip down memory lane!  I never expected it would be so difficult to get rid of something like that!

Full moon madness

Today I was listening to a group of people who were talking about the full moon coming up.  They were talking about how they think that it is a myth that people act a little bit crazy during the full moon.  As for me, I’ve noticed lots of people tend to be crankier than usual.  And people that I know that work in hospitals and with rescue squads say that their emergency calls increase.  I know that tides are higher during the full moon, so I think it is entirely possible.  What do you think?

Waiting on Uncle Sam

I’m thinking of using some of my tax refund check to purchase some nice new quality Luggage. I’ve never owned anything other than suitcases that I’ve picked up at yard sales and thrift stores throughout the years. I do plan on doing some traveling in the near future and I’d like to be able to pack my belongings in a decent set of Briggs and Riley Luggage or possibly some of the Hartmann Luggage that I’ve a lot of lately.

I’m sure that if I take my time and look around on the Internet that I could find a sweet deal on some luggage online. I’d be looking for free shipping and a site that accepts PayPal as a form of payment for their merchandise, that is always helpful. There isn’t a big rush, but I’d like to go ahead and start researching them in order to have a few websites bookmarked for when I do receive this much anticipated check from good old Uncle Sam. I sent the paperwork out a few weeks ago so it shouldn’t be too much longer. It would have gotten here faster if I had sent it electronically, but I elected the old fashioned paper via the U.S. Post Office. Maybe next year I’ll try it the faster way.
