Quiet Christmas

Spent a quiet Christmas this year with my folks on the farm.  Mom’s health is deteriorating and we wanted to be close to her, yet remain calm as much as possible.  My aunt Liz came to the farm Christmas Eve with most of the Christmas dinner already cooked from her place.  It was nice to see her again, I haven’t seen her in several months.  We spent much of the day looking through family photo albums.  It is difficult to watch my parent’s generation age.  All in all, Christmas is a special day.

Recovery entertainment

I’ve decided to give my brother a subscription to Direct TV for his Christmas present.  He was injured in a car accident a while ago and has been having to spend a lot of time in bed recovering from surgeries.  The doctors say it will take at least a year or two for all of the surgeries to be complete, and he needs to limit his activities while recovering.   When I went over to see him last weekend he was complaining about how bored he was getting with his selection of television programs.  With a subscription to DirectTV I’m sure that he will be able to stay better entertained while staying still.

I’ve had Directv myself long enough to know that there should be plenty of sports and movies for him to watch no matter the time of day.  I’m glad that I don’t have to go through what he is going through, but I’m also glad that there are entertainment options out there that will help keep the boredom away.

Junk mail

Lately it seems that the pile of junk mail is getting a lot taller.  Interestingly enough it isn’t full of catalogs; most of it is “pre-approved” credit card offers.  I find these offers very disturbing because the companies are NOT offering a good deal at all.  I wish they’d just stop sending me this mail completely.  I don’t know how to get off of their junk mail list.  If you know how to get off of these kinds of lists, please let me know!  I’m tired of getting it and I think it is a huge waste of time, energy, trees, and money!

Just his luck

Brad came over last night for a while.  He just got back from his vacation in California.  He had gone to his sister’s wedding in Los Angeles and took some extra time off to drive around and sight-see.  He said he was having a great time until his Ford Explorer blew a head gasket.  Brad has the worst luck!  Not just with cars, but with just about everything!  It’s a good thing he is a mild and good humored guy; he has had so much bad luck it’s hard to imagine how he keeps his wits about him!

So Brad had to find a good Los Angeles auto repair service that could fix his Explorer in a timely manner and not cost him an arm and a leg.  It was in the shop for only a day and they gave him a loaner car so it didn’t slow him down too much.  Except for the cost, that is.  Replacing a head gasket is not the cheapest auto repair you can do.  I’m glad for Brad’s sake that he didn’t blow the motor or do something else much more dangerous and expensive.

Michelob’s Original Lager

I’ve always enjoyed the taste of Ying Ling’s Lager and haven’t found another Lager that I really care for until a buddy of mine came over this weekend with a cooler full of Michelob’s Original Lager. I have to tell you that I was impressed with it and found it worthy enough to post about it here. The only problem that I could find with the Michelob’s Lager version is that it takes a bottle opener to open the darn thing instead of being a twist off cap like what we all have become accustomed to using these days. It took a while to find a bottle opener around the place but once we found one and cracked one open it was worth the effort!
