Saving energy saves money and the environment

Compact fluorescent bulbs are a good way to save energy.  They use less electricity than a standard incandescent light bulb.  Something that uses less electricity means a lower electric bill, so that saves the consumer money.  Using less electricity also puts a lesser strain on the environment because most of the electricity that we use come from sources that harm the environment – either, coal, oil, nuclear, or hydro-dam generators.  Although the technology is available for power that is generated by the sun and the wind, those methods are not widely used yet.  Businesses switching to CFL bulbs will help to lower their costs, which is good for their profit margin, and good for the environment.  And after all, that profit margin is the reason businesses are in business, right?

Road trip

I regret leaving California on that dreaded warm day in the middle of summer to drive across the country. Whatever you do don’t leave California without having your car at least checked for possible malfunctioning parts. I don’t care if its the battery, air conditioner, heat, tires, or whatever. At least have a professional give it the go ahead to make the trip first.

I remember, not driving, but riding across the country with my best friend. We left San Diego and struck out across the southern states toward the east. It was my first trip crossing the country in a car so it started out as fascination for me. It ended up with me almost burning up or freezing to death. I can handle the heat but cannot handle the cold.

Uncle Pat may be moving

Uncle Pat’s kids want him to move closer to where they live in New Jersey.  They think that he’s getting too old to be living out in the country by himself.  They’re afraid that his mental health is deteriorating and he might accidentally burn the house down, or injure himself (or someone else) in some other way.  So they are using a bergen county real estate agent to try to help them find a new place that is large enough for all of them – a main house with an “in-law” apartment.  That way they can keep an eye on him but he can also feel like he is maintaining his own independence and privacy.

It runs in the family

Mom just doesn’t understand the way the numbers work and just because she says she feels funny, she thinks she needs to eat, which is not the case most of the time.   Yet again, set in her ways, she may not be able to understand why that is.

At least we have someone to sit with her during the day to help prepare meals, monitor her blood pressure, and sugar levels, and to make sure she uses her leg circulation pump a couple of times a day to push the fluid from her legs.

I have always known moms legs to swell big but I did not think they would swell for the rest of her life.  At least the circulation pump is helping some.

I know the diabetes runs in our family and I may develop it at some point in life.  The legs already ache and swell some so I most likely have the start of it.

Anyway!  If I make it to moms age of 86, I will be lucky.  She has lived a long life.

Went to Home and Garden show

Lynn invited me to go to the home and garden trade show at the armory this weekend.  I didn’t have anything better to do, so I agreed.  She picked me up at my place around 9am on Saturday, and off we went.  Lynn was interested in looking at the garden displays and sunroom displays.  She also spent a lot of time checking out the spas and hot tubs!  She’s dreaming of a day when she can afford all of these improvements to her house!

As for me, I thought the stuff was all pretty cool.  I’ve never been to a trade show before, so what actually fascinated me the most whas the huge variety of trade show booths that were there!  I never realized how many different kinds of table skirts there were!   I started to look closely at the way the banner stands and pipe and drape displays were constructed.  Very innovative!

I struck up a conversation with a few of the displays that impressed me the most, and I was surprised that most of them said that they had bought their display booth products from camelbackdisplays.com.  Funny name, but cool products!  I’ll have to remember that name for when the Family Shelter asks me to help them with their display booth at the next County Fair!
