Cell Phone Safety

A pet peeve of mine is the cell phone.  Everyone has one.  They tend to be a nuisance to me and is nothing more than another thing to have to hold onto during my busy day.

I am guilty of owning two at one time or another but not two at the same time.  One was a Verizon phone with a camera built into it.  It took great pictures but Verizon charged you .25 to send those pictures to your email so you publish them to your computer.  It should have been a free service.  I had a regular plan every month with them but it just wasn’t practical for me to have a cell phone, especially when I did not need to call very many people at all during the day.

The second phone was a Virgin Mobile prepaid cell.  It was basic, compact, and convenient but I did not like that you had top-up within 60 days or lose your air-time if you did not.  I bought it in case of emergencies to call family and work but again, it was not practical because I would lose many minutes to expiration, so I shut the phone down.

My worst peeve is to see people riding down the road talking on cell phones without paying attention to what they are doing.  They are distracted and it can cause an accident.  What gets to me is that many of these people feel they are kings or queens and people with safety on their minds should bow to them because they own the road.  They have another thing coming.  If it hasn’t become law yet, I am sure it will be soon.  Too many people are being hurt because of stupidity of cell phone users on the road.

The cell phone is a wonderful little gadget but come on people.  What is so important that just cant wait until you are safely parked in the vehicle off the roadway.  Better yet!  Just pull over to the shoulder if you must take that all important call from your best friend to listen to her latest excursion to the mall.  There is nothing more important than your life.  Be safe.  Drive safe, and be responsible.  Your life depends on it.

Rustic Furniture

When I think of rustic furniture, I think of wood that may be scarred from the passage of time and use.  Furniture such as the old jelly cupboard that came out of my grandfathers barn that was passed down from his parents, I believe made out of all pine.

I think of Moms old Cedar Wardrobe and Cedar Chest, the buffet table of the early 1900s made out of pressed woods and veneers and even the tiny metal wagon wheel sconces that my father gave her years ago hanging on the dining room wall.  Rustic is the old black pot-bellied stove of black metal sitting in the kitchen.

I know most of the furniture passed down through our family were made from cedars, pines, and oak woods.   I picture rustic and antique as mostly the same in my opinion though.   I picture rustic as old looking and made with lots of care and effort as is with antiques. Of course none of our family heirlooms measure up to the beauty of the furniture pictured in the Rustic Furniture catalog. The furniture pictured there is rustic looking with a modern newly built flair to it.

Summer Heat

The past couple of days here have been unsettled.  First it started out with the light rain to heavy rain, then to fog and mist, with cool temperatures.

This morning the it was quite cloudy but a bit humid, yet still quite comfortable around here.  Just a few minutes ago the sun peaked through the clouds and the temperature must have climbed quickly past 80 degrees.   I guess we will be inundated with instability this afternoon due to the sun and humidity hanging around.  Look out for the heavy showers and thunderstorms later on.

Summers around here can be so miserable.  I usually lock myself in my apartment all day and try not to venture out until later in the evening.  I can deal better with the heat though than I can with the cold.  The cold of Winter just makes the bones and joints ache all the time.  That I suppose comes with getting older.

All the same, I do prefer to deal with the heat than with the cold.  At least things can thrive in warmer weather.  I know I do.

Awful Drivers

Over the past ten years I have noticed that when people see a school bus on the road, they instantly act as if it is a hindrance to their way of life.

People do not understand that if you cut a school bus off while driving down the road, it will take that school bus twice as far to stop if you jump in front of it, not using a turn signal, and hit your brakes, so think twice before jumping in front of that school bus just to get ahead of it.

Lets us use this example.  You are traveling down a two lane highway and the speed limit is marked 55mph.  A school bus is traveling in the right lane going, say 45mph.  The traffic is frustrating you because it is wall to wall in the left lane coming up past the school bus.  You see a spot as you ride along side the school bus and as soon as you get enough space between the vehicle in front of you and the front of the school bus, you zip right over in front of the school bus that is loaded with students, without using your turn signaling device.

Once in the right lane in front of the school bus you notice there is another vehicle almost directly in front of you and you immediately hit your brakes to slow from running into the back of that vehicle.  What do you think the school bus is doing that was directly behind you?

While the school bus has seen you zip in front of him, he is trying to adjust his acceleration by backing off the distance between your vehicle and his school bus to give him a comfortable zone in case he has to make the bus come to a stop suddenly without harming anyone.

You have potentially put yourself, the vehicle riding in front of you, and the school bus load of students in harms way.  Although, the school bus driver is adjusting his distance between him and you, if you were to have to make that quick stop, that school bus could potentially hit you in the rear end.  Who’s negligent in this type of accident if that school bus happens to hit you in the rear end?  The school bus driver for following too close or the driver in front of you for stopping in the road quickly?

If the driver in front you had no valid reason for stopping in the roadway, he may be at fault for causing an accident which is highly doubtful.  In this case the at-fault would mostly lie with you.  Your aggressive driving and failure to see the big picture put a school bus load of students in danger.  So!  The school bus hit you in the rear end mangling your car.  You zipped in front of the school bus without assessing the possible danger of taking up space needed for him to keep that bus safe.  The school bus had to get his vehicle stopped with minimal distance without too much skidding to minimize bodily injury to his passengers.  He most likely hit you in the rear because of your carelessness.  Most law enforcement officials, upon a full investigation of the accident will clear that school bus driver of no wrong doing.  His on board camera will authenticate his actions of trying to decrease his following distance to keep from him hitting you.  You will most likely receive the traffic violation for the accident.

A word of advice to anyone would be, if you are involved in an at-fault traffic violation involving a school bus, you will get the book thrown at you.  Law enforcement is out there to make sure the roads are kept safe to travel on and when carelessness puts children in danger, they will not take kindly to traffic violators.

Keeping students safe is the school bus drivers main responsibility.
