New to website creation
My cousin has been talking about starting her own business in the next couple of years. She actually has a good idea for a non-profit organization that is going to be helping people who have served time in jail for non-violent crimes. The ex-cons that don’t have friends or family waiting on the “outside” to help them get their lives back together will be able to come to her business and get some help. She’s talking about building a large campus with dormitories and apartments on site. I would love to help her out with her project, but she lives hundreds of miles away from her.
I was reading a webhostinghub review about how easy it is to create a small business website and thought that maybe that is one way I can help my cousin from afar – I could help her with her website. I’ll offer to set it up for free and help her out that way. I’m sure that will be a relief for her. Now she can focus on her fund raising and picking out a location for her business and all of the other hundreds of decisions that need to be made when you plan something that big and great!
Family fun
Some of my favorite childhood memories are about taking a short break from the rigors of life and going away for a long weekend with the family. We had a small Avion travel trailer and we would use it a few times every year to take the whole family on a trip.
I can remember taking it one year to Gettysburg during a spring break. It was unseasonably cold there, and even though we had the heater cranked up as high as it would go, we were still freezing! Then there was a Christmas break down to the some islands off of the coast of the Carolinas. I can’t remember at the top of my head what the name of the islands were; I just remember how my parents had the smallest artificial Christmas tree I’ve ever seen perched on top of the dining table!
My parents modified the trailer so that one of us actually slept in the bathtub, one of us on top of the dresser in the bedroom, one of us on a cot in the kitchen, and two of us on the sofa-bed, while my parents slept in the double sized bed in the bedroom! Looking back, I think my parents were crazy, but I have to give them credit for trying!
Eye doctors
I took my mother to the eye doctor last week. Her eyes seem to be failing pretty fast as she ages, and I like to make sure that she gets the eyeglasses that she needs so she can keep doing the things that she loves to do – her knitting and crocheting and other needlework. As she ages she finds herself sitting more than ever and she likes to keep her hands and mind busy. She used to always say to me “Busy hands are happy hands” and “Idle minds are the devil’s workshop.”
I’ve noticed over the past few months that Mom’s vision seems to be getting worse, she is wearing stained clothes that she didn’t pretreat because she didn’t see the stain, either before OR after washing it. So off we went to the eye doctor. The doctor said that Mom has a large cataract in her right eye, and a lot of small ones in her left eye. And her prescription has changed since last year, so the eye doctor wrote her a new prescription. He suggested that she go to frame selection part of his office and pick out a new pair of glasses. I asked him to please put on the prescription the pupillary distance between her eyes so that we could buy the glasses from Zenni Optical – a website that sells inexpensive glasses. I don’t begrudge this guy the right to earn a living, but Mom is on a tight budget and can’t afford to pay the high prices he charges for glasses!
Country Safety
This guest post compliments of Carlene Schlesinger.
Living out in the country, on a private dirt road, with only a few neighbors in close proximity, you would think a neighborhood watch would be useless. Instead, it is probably the single most useful tool to preventing any of our homes from being broken into or other crimes form taking place. Choosing to live outside of a gated community type of setting allows freedom, but also comes at a cost. With no private security in place, and the State Police over 30 minutes away, neighbors need to band together to keep the area safe for the families that live here.
Taking turns with the neighbors, we patrol the area every few hours, and have come across some very interesting situations that were reported to the police. We don’t follow a set schedule, and you may find two or more of the families out at the same time, but there is almost always someone watching out.
There are a few “party houses” in our area that draw large crowds on weekends. Because of this, we’ve installed motion detector lighting around the entire house and garage, and a home alarm system, to warn us if anyone is trying to get in the door. I feel safer knowing that if something happens, the door alarm system is there as another layer of protection.
Remote control club
I read in the local newspaper that a new club is forming for remote control airplane enthusiasts. Apparently they have managed to arrange for a piece of land to use for their landing strip. I’ve always been interested in remote control aircraft: I think I’ll try to hook up with these guys! I just wish I could remember where and when I read that article. Maybe I’ll have to Google it. I think it sounds like a lot of fun!
